Something is not Right

On Friday, I dropped off Henry's a urine sample and a stool sample to Dr. Bianchi's office. The urine sample came back negative for a possible UTI. And, the stool sample was "unremarkable." They don't think he's sick. Tara came in the afternoon, and Cuyler came in the late afternoon.

Why isn't Henry eating? Possibilities include:
(a) he has a virus (although his pediatrician doesn't think so)
(b) his reflux is still a problem
(c) he is allergic to something he was fed
(d) he has developed a negative association with food and is thus resisting eating/drinking
(e) some combination of the above

Cuyler showed us some techniques for giving him liquids via cup (in the event that the negative association with the bottle becomes so strong). Henry threw up all over Jeff during Cuyler's visit. After Cuyler left, Jeff gave Henry some Prevacid, which was thrown up shortly thereafter. And then, Henry had some major diarrhea. Needless to say, Henry's fluid intake is way down (again). But this child isn't sick.

On Saturday morning, the Arizona Daily Start had a cover story that said that the norovirus ("winter vomiting disease") has hit Pima County. Symptoms include: severe vomiting, diarrhea and cramps. Henry cried all afternoon, which simply isn't like him. He had another diaper with "brick dust" urine in it.

This morning, Henry had a large diaper. I weighed him. Surprise, surprise, he only weighed 15 lbs 1 oz. This is down from 1/28 when we weighed 15 lbs 10 ozs. I don't think that losing 9 ozs over 5 days is normal. His hands and feed are cold. He took a little bit of his bottle, but he is still refusing it for the most part. He's asleep now. Jeff and I are debating taking him into Urgent Care. Jeff doesn't want to. He doesn't want Henry to pick up an illness in the waiting room. He also doesn't think that the medical establishment knows much. He thinks that they'll just tell us to give Henry Pedialyte (which we've tried) and send us on our way. I don't disagree with those arguments. I guess I'm holding out for the possibility that we'll run into a doctor who doesn't have his or her head up his/her "fill-in-the-blank" and might take the time to listen to our observations. Even better yet, have some solutions. But I guess that isn't what the medical establishment does. My former OB, the fraud, being a good case in point.
