The Hugging Banshee

On Tuesday Henry went to visit his grandparents again in the afternoon so Kate could stay home and work on a book chapter that is coming due. I joined them later and we went to Swenson's for dinner. Henry was very well behaved except for one point where he shrieked as loud as he could. There was no prelude, he was just crawling along the bench seat happy as can be and then let loose the banshee cry. Other diners jumped in their seats and looked rather surprised that the culprit was an innocent little boy with no apparent complaints. If volume is any measure, his chronic lung disease is rather insignificant.

Another cute thing at Swenson's was when he was drinking some tea from a straw and spilled it on the table (spilled = sucked a bunch up and then spit it out). Grandma and I started cleaning it up. He grabbed the napkin from me and started wiping the table. He happily wiped the table for the next 10 minutes. I had to think at that point, maybe I can cultivate this behavior. Note to self, demonstrate mopping and vacuuming to Henry at earliest possible age.

On Wednesday he visited his grandparents again. I believe they went swimming. Grandma and Grandpa drove him back home.

Thursday and Friday Henry vomited rather large amounts. This happened a week or so ago as well. He doesn't appear to be sick. We think it may be related to the flax seed oil he is taking. A few weeks ago we asked Alicia to mix in some flax seed oil in his food during the day. He only gets a very small amount. However, he only seems to vomit when Alicia is around. I'm not sure but we will probably discontinue the flax seed oil for a while to see how things go.

Speaking of Alicia, her daughter Karina managed to say "Henry" this week. She is starting to walk and we hope will encourage Henry to imitate her. She was in a much better mood this week, I think because she had some more teeth come in. Either that or I'm just getting used to her constant screaming.

Today Henry had his physical therapy appointment with Shirley. It had been two weeks since his last appointment and Shirley saw a big difference. He is much more confident in his standing and is doing a very good job when walking behind his push toys. He is more upright and his feet are flat on the floor. He also walks while being held by only one hand very well. She brought two badminton rackets that she holds up so he can grab the racket end and walk around. He loved them so much we pulled out a tennis racket for him to play with.

I asked specifically how much he needs to wear his shoes because I am concerned about his right ankle and its tendency to roll in putting his arch against the ground. She looked it over and watched him walking on it. She thought it was just weak and that more time walking will strengthen it. She said we might want to see an orthopedist for a second opinion. I'm not sure if we will do that or not. We might wait to see how he does once he really starts walking.

His latest skill is hugging. He has been good at giving hugs for some time. However, now he knows what a hug is and will give it when asked. It really is more of a snuggle with his head but it is extremely cute. He likes to hug Roger the most. Today Kate was sitting with him and Bitsy the cat and she said "Give Bitsy a hug" and he leaned over and put his head on her. I was impressed because it means he knows what a hug is and who Bitsy is.
