The Sweetest Child Ever

Henry was a bit poky getting up on Tuesday morning. He definitely takes after me in wanting to stay up late and then sleep in. He had a good day with Alicia and Karina. He drank tons and tons of milk. He had been drinking less than usual the past week, but not Monday. He was drinking with great gusto.

In the afternoon before Alicia and Karina left, I was sitting on the floor, next to Henry who was reading a book or something. Karina came over to me and started playing with a nursery rhyme "book" (it has about 6 hard plastic pages with words of the rhymes; as you turn the pages, it sings the rhymes). Her back was to Henry within arms reach, and she was only wearing a diaper. I was rubbing her back as she looked at the "book." Henry turned and watched me for a few seconds, and then put his hand on Karina's back and started patting and rubbing it too. It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen. He can be such a gentle little boy.

A week ago from last Friday (I think) when Shirley was visiting, Henry was petting Princess who was lounging on the couch. Henry started delicately stroking her whiskers. Jeff and I stood nearby to make sure that he didn't yank on her. I was simply amazed at how gentle he can be.

He has been really great with the animals all the way around. He pets them nicely. And, for the most part, he hasn't been pulling on Roger's ears (although he did yesterday, which he hasn't done in a long time). Roger is so very tolerant. Henry has also been giving Roger lots of hugs lately. If you say, "Henry, why don't you give Roger a hug?" He'll do so, leaning his head on Roger's back. For a couple weeks now, he has really understood the hug. If you give him a stuffed animal and suggest that the stuffed animal needs a hug, he'll give it a big squeeze. As soon as we get our camera fixed, we'll capture that on video.

Another super cute thing that Henry did yesterday was pull at his ears when "Do Your Ears Hang Low" was being projected from his singing dog. If you touch the dog's ear, it sets off the song. The song went off, Henry heard the word "ears," and then grabbed them. That's his second body part location mastered (first body part learned was "tummy"). We are currently working on "head" and "nose." Last week, when Henry heard the "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" song, he grabbed his head. When the song is emanating from the musical song cube, I sometimes touch my head during the part where it says "one fell off and bumped his head."

Elsa, Henry's developmental coordinator, visited Tuesday afternoon. We haven't heard from Henry's OT in awhile. His first OT, Cuyler, called a couple days ago, just to make sure that we were doing OK. Apparently, Selah, Henry's current OT, is still in the hospital. We are hoping that she is getting better. Elsa said that it appears that Tara, Henry's first developmental coordinator who has been on sick leave, unfortunately won't be able to come back to work as soon as she (and we) had hoped. And their office is reorganizing clients in relation to where the coordinators live (which makes logistical sense). Consequently, even when Tara does come back to work, she probably won't be reassigned to Henry's case. Elsa will be his new permanent developmental coordinator. She was checking to make sure we are OK with that, in part because English is not her first language. She has a thick, Spanish accident. We are definitely sad not to be seeing Tara again and hope that she's doing OK, but we do like Elsa very much. And neither Jeff nor I find the language situation to be problematic. She talks to Henry sometimes in Spanish, and we like that.

Elsa went through a check list of behaviors. She went through the items for 12-18 month olds. And Henry was doing just about everything on the list. She commented on how smart he is. Who are we to disagree? She's said it before. She also commented on what a sweet child he is, a very nice little boy. Again, no arguments from us.

After the appointment, Jeff took Henry to my parents' house while I worked on a book chapter. I've been working on it for awhile now. Long story short, at 1AM this morning, I closed out of the document. Opened it up a few minutes later. Everything that I was working on was gone. I don't know what happened. It was days worth of work. I'm a compulsive saver and had marked the settings for 10 minute back ups. So frustrating. I just hate the thought of having to do all the work again...it is time spent away from Henry.

Jeff and Henry saw Aunt Erin and Uncle Brian in the afternoon. Even though Henry looks like Jeff overall, Erin commented that Henry furrows his eyes brows just like me. Jeff, Henry, and my parents went to Swenson's last night for dinner. Jeff said that Henry loved the train. Henry was asleep by the time they returned home.
